How to setup your OMV NAS with Raid 1

This example shows setting up Raid 1 using external USB WD drives. This will let you see how OMV works before you go with a full blown systems. You will see by searching the forums that it isnt suggested to use USB drives. In the case of RPi, it is due to a single controller being on the RPI board that doesn’t have as much throughput capacity as regular motherboards.

Since we are using multiple drives, I would suggest using a power USB hub so that you are pulling as much power as two drives have the potential from from the RPi computer.

Adding a 2nd drive to an existing single drive to make a raid 1 (mirrored) configuration

SSH to OMV RPi

  • Disable SMB Service
  • Delete SMB Share
  • Delete Shared Folder (select the option to delete Folder but not data)
  • Dismount sda1

Establish a SSH session to your RPi/OMV server

Try ls -l /dev/s*
Do this before plugging in the second drive
Repeat after plugging in 2nd drive to help correctly identify 2nd drive

mdadm –create /dev/md/name /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 –level=1 –raid-devices=2

Note:
Name – change this to the name you want the RAID associated to
Sda1 – this is the first drive you started with
Sda2 – this is the second drive you are adding

This command copies the data from the first drive to the second drive. Depending on the USB drives you are using, the drive names may be slightly different (especially if you are using the powered USB hub that I mentioned earlier).

To check status of raid build
mdadm –detail /dev/md127 (change 127 to number shown in OVM portal)
You will find the number under Storage, Raid Management

Status of array build will also be found under Storage, Raid Management

  1. Setup the drive for being access
    a. Click on Storage, File Systems
    b. Click on Raid 1 Drive
    c. Click on Mount
  2. Setup a user to access the file share
    a. Click on Access Rights Management, Users
    b. Click on +Add
    c. Click on Add
    d. Enter name of user and password where indicated
    e. Click on Save
    f. Click on Apply
    g. Click on Yes
  3. Setup Drive for being shared
    a. Click on Services, SMB/CIFS
    b. Click on Enable
    c. Click on Save
    d. Click on Apply
    e. Click on Yes
    f. Change on Workgroup to match what you are using on your windows computers
  4. Setup Drive to be shared
    a. Click on Shares
    b. Click on +Add
    c. Click on + On Shared Folder line
    d. Enter name for Share (i.e. NAS) in name field
    e. Click on drop down arrow on device line and select the USB drive you connected
    f. Click on Save
    g. Click on Save
    h. Click on Apply
    i. Click on Yes
