1. Clone
a. Click on Machine name in Virtual box
b. Click on List icon to the right of machine name
c. Click on Clone
d. Enter name for clone, path for VM storage and Nat policy
e. Click on Continue
f. Click on Full or Linked Clone
g. Click on Continue
h. Click on Clone
2. Snapshot
a. VM Powered Off
i. Click on Machine name in Virtual box
ii. Click on List icon to the right of machine name
iii. Click on Snapshot
iv. Click on New
v. Enter name for snapshot backup
vi. Click on OK
b. VM Powered On
i. Click on Machine name on menu bar
ii. Click on Take Snapshot
iii. Enter name for snapshot backup
iv. Click on OK
3. OS specific options (i.e. backup tool in Android OS)
Cloning a machine or taking a snapshot with the VM powered off will have the best chance of a successful backup. Depending on what you have running in a particular VM, you may not have a good backup of one or more files (i.e. when a database app is running).
