How to improve OMV functionality

Here are some starting points to help improve your results from using OpenMediaVault on your Raspberry Pi

1. Set to correct timezone
a. Click on System, Date & Time
b. Set to the timezone your OMV is in
2. Set DHCP reservation
a. This will be done on your Wifi router
b. Default hostname to look for is rapsberrypi
3. Enable S.M.A.R.T. monitoring of drives
a. Click on Storage, S.M.A.R.T.
b. Click on Enable
c. Click on Save
d. Click on Apply
e. Click on Yes
f. Click on Devices
g. Click on Monitor for first drive
h. Click On Edit
i. Click on Monitor to enable
j. Click on Save
k. Click on Apply
l. Click on Yes
m. Repeat starting at step for each additional drive you will be enabling
4. Label the drives as to their linux device name to make it easier to replace a failed drive or in adding a new drive
5. Wired vs wireless network connection
6. Change host name from default
a. Click on System, Network
b. Change Hostname to what you want it to be
c. Click on Save
d. Click on Apply
7. Resetting web interface password – omv-firstaid
a. This option allows you to reset your web portal password
b. Command will be run from a console (SSH) login
8. Properly shutting down OMV
a. Click on drop down arrow on the right hand area of screen
b. Click on Shutdown
c. If you just power off the OMV without shutting down, your array have to go through a rebuilt process if if things something when wrong because of the sudden power down
9. Apply latest updates
a. Click on System, Update Management
b. Click on checkbox beside Package Information
c. Click on Upgrade to start the process
d. Click on Close when complete
e. Click on Reload
